Course details
Join Michelle Elvy in this introductory writing course to build your writing confidence. This basic writing course will explore the ‘how to’ of writing, from building-block structures to meanings between the lines. Explore different writing forms that will help in your own writing, be it fiction, poetry, essay or business materials.
Each week, participants will be introduced to a topic with an introductory set of discussion points, writing assignments along with recommended reading and a chance to share your writing drafts.

About the trainer
Michelle Elvy
Michelle Elvy is an accomplished writer, editor, and once-upon-a-time historian based in Dunedin, New Zealand. She shares her expertise as an online instructor at 52|250 A Year of Writing and contributes to the literary community as the editor of Flash Frontier: An Adventure in Short Fiction and the chair of New Zealand's National Flash Fiction Day. Additionally, Michelle serves as the reviews editor for Landfall, the oldest literary journal in NZ.
Her widely published and anthologised works encompass stories, poetry, travel writing, and reviews. Notable among her literary achievements are the books the everrumble (2019) and the other side of better (2021), as well as anthologies like Bonsai: Best small stories of Aotearoa New Zealand (2018) and Ko Aotearoa Tātou | We Are New Zealand (2020). She is currently working alongside Ihimaera on Love in the Time of COVID: A Chronicle of a Pandemic, a forthcoming anthology scheduled for 2023 featuring voices from around the world.

Creative Writing: Non-Fiction I, II & III
An exploration of the fascinating possibilities (both artistic and commercial) in creative non-fiction. A very elastic genre with many sub-specialities, this introductory writing course is for those who are interested in writing creative non-fiction, which includes the memoir, personal essay (‘the lyric essay’), travel writing, reportage, comic writing, narrative history and other sub-genres. The prerequisite for Level II is the completion of the previous level or prior experience. Applicants who wish to join Level II and have prior experience in non-fiction writing are required to submit their writing portfolio for the trainer’s review. Creative Writing: Fiction I & II
Uncover the fundamentals of writing fiction with an eye on both the short story and the novel. An introductory writing workshop that will explore setting, point-of-view, dialogue, conflict, plot, tone, voice, character and genre. The course will reference contemporary fiction, film, television and other art forms that demonstrate fundamental lessons in narrative while simultaneously emphasising their operation in polished literary fiction. Memoir: Writing your story, real and imagined
Join Michelle Elvy, writer and editor and once-upon-a time historian from New Zealand for a course in writing memoir. The course will consist of discussions and exercises with a focus around building voice and creating believable story arcs around material that is drawn from memory – and the space that we need to examine between memory and reality. You will be introduced to a variety of memoir writing – from straight narrator to graphic novel to diary-like writing to creative non-fiction small story writing.
